Choose The Cruise For You: CME River or Ocean Cruise?

Study and have a vacation at the same time!

Your typical continuing medical education cruise, or CME cruise, usually has this as a slogan. CME cruises are one of the more unique ways to garner CME credits as they provide a sense of balance between studying and having fun.

Cruises with medical experts on board are not hard to come by nowadays, but you’ll have to choose between an ocean cruise or a river cruise. Here are some differences that can help you determine which type of cruise is for you:

I. Mingling Aplenty

If you’re someone that loves to socialize then a river cruise is right up your alley. Although socialization is not forced on a river cruise, because you will be on a smaller cruise ship,  you’ll have plenty of opportunity to mingle with guests. Your chance to get to know your fellow physicians and those that are in the same specialization as you is an opportunity you can’t simply miss.

Besides socializing with your fellow physicians, you can even start a conversation with the officers and captain, and of course, the other guests!

II. Culture Galore

Besides socialization, if you’re a person who loves to fully immerse in the culture when you go on vacations, river cruises are the best choice for you. Although an ocean cruise has its cultural value as well, you won’t have much of a cultural experience due to your time mostly traveling from one place to another.

River cruises, meanwhile, dock directly at the town port instead of those large industrial ones. Plus, you won’t have to travel a long way, giving you plenty of time to explore more of the town’s colorful culture.

One more benefit of river cruises is its inclusions. Most river cruises tend to include shore excursions and tours, unlike with larger ocean cruises where you have to pay an extra fee.

BONUS: Health is Wealth!

This bonus content is more of a personal opinion on the benefit a river cruise provides, but note that due to its more active inclusivities with land excursions, such as hiking, biking, and walking, it’s easier to get active if you’re a physician wanting to go healthy as you get your CME credits.
